Leukemia, Cancer of the Blood Cells

When someone is diagnosed with Leukemia, they are told they have cancer of the blood cells but this can also be cancer of the bone marrow. This disease is described as the abnormal increase of immature white blood cells. There is no single known cause for any of the many different types of leukemia but what is known is, like other cancers, leukemia results from mutations in the patient's DNA. As time passes, these leukemia cells will crowd the normal red blood cells which can lead to bleeding, infections and anemia. These cells can also spread to other organs, lymph nodes and cause pain and swelling.

Pharmaceutical medications are the common form of treatment and this is combined to include a multi-drug form of chemotherapy regimen. Radiation therapy is another form of treatment and in some cases, a transplant of bone marrow can be useful. Symptoms will depend on the type of leukemia the person has but there are common symptoms which can include: headaches, easily bruising or bleeding, joint or bone pain, nights sweats and fever, swollen lymph nodes in the groin area as well as the neck or armpit, a feeling of being very weak or tired and losing weight accompanied by no appetite.

Anyone who puts their health in the hands of their GP expect to get the right diagnosis and the correct form of treatment. When this is not what happens, a GP medical negligence case could result.
