Eye Cancer Surgery

Eye cancer surgery refers to set of methods adopted or recommended to eliminate tumors by surgical methods. Is is one of the safest procedures adopted for curing cancer of eyes and also helps to boost eye cancer survival rate of the victim. Surgery for eye cancer also helps in complete elimination of tumors and plays a considerable role in preventing eye cancer recurrence.

Importance of Eye Cancer Surgery

Eye cancer is a malignant disorder of eyes and needs to be cured well to avoid damage to other adjacent areas of eyes. Most common form of eye cancer found in adults is uveal eye cancer and the  infected cells originate in uvea. The disease is also detected quite frequently in children and retinoblastoma is the most common form of cancer of eyes found in teenagers. According to latest statistical reports, average age for occurrence of the disorder in adults is 50 years and people within age group of 50-70 years are most prone to it.

It is easy to undergo eye cancer cure in a systematic and safe manner if tumors are detected in early phases. Strong immune system is an added advantage in undergoing treatment as it helps in fast mental and physical recovery. Aggressive eye cancer treatments need to be executed in old people as compared to young ones. This is because old people have high chances of suffering from other cancerous or non-cancerous disorders that may decrease effectiveness of treatment to fight cancerous growth and increase chances of fatalities. Also, the body cells and tissues in old people are less resistant to fight cancerous growth and make the cure process time-consuming and complicated.

Eye cancer survival rate is quite good in early phases and almost 85% of the victims manage to survive the disorder safely. It goes down to around 68% in intermediate stages when the malignant rumors begin to spread to local or regional areas but do not affect lymph nodes. Chances of survival are less than 15% in final stages when these cancer tumors increase their scope to lymph nodes and  reach remote areas. Surgery is highly beneficial in initial stages when the tumors restrict themselves to a particular region. Its reliability to remove tumors decreases in advanced stages and is usually undergone with other forms of treatments like chemotherapy and radiation treatment.

Forms of Eye Cancer Surgery

Enucleation of eye is the most vital and major form of surgery for eye cancer. It is done to remove whole eye but eyelids and eye muscles are left untouched. It is recommended if cancerous growth is spread to major areas of eye and chances of metastasis to local or regional areas is high. In some cases, cancerous infection may target iris and can be treated by a surgical method called iridectomy. Eyewall resection is a rare surgical method applied to remove tumors by making temporary cuts in eye.

Infected choroid layer can be removed by a surgery called choroidectomy. Iridocyclectomy is an important surgical process recommended to remove infected portion of ciliary body and iris. Orbital exenteration is a surgery done to treat advanced or recurrent eye cancer and involves removal of eyelids and surrounding skin, eyes, nerves within the scope of eye region, and orbital muscles.
Eye cancer surgery is a basic step to undergoing reliable eye cancer therapy and can be done simultaneously with other kinds of treatments if chances of removing infected polyps are high. Thorough medical supervision and apt eye cancer diagnosis helps considerably in increasing effectiveness of surgical pattern.
